So we decide to escape from the crazy Tokyo life, and hoping we could cool down our heads, take care of us, and improve melanine production on our skin, we went to Guam. This little island on Micronesia, is USA territory full of coral reefs...enough for us to want to go there...fish, ocean, english speaking people, and whatever Micronesia would had to offer for 5 days. We got a little shocked when we saw that apparently all Japan had the same idea as us, and we could only see Japanese people everywhere...this is indeed one of the favorite vacations spots for Japanese people (yes...it's true...they have vacations....) due to many malls existing in the main touristic beach area of the island, Tumon beach. That's where our hotel was and that's where we went to the beach!

Since Tumon beach has a lot of hotels, although it was relatively empty beach (Japanese people don't like the beach, and let's just say that beach doesn't like them either...), we were advised to go to Ypao beach. Ypao beach is well preserved beach when comparing with Tumon, and has a great underwater diversity that reminded us were our natural habitat was :)

In Guam we met Alyssa, a scientist doing her thesis at Guam University, friend that we met last year in Yokohama during a congress. Alyssa and her boyfriend Sparky were simply great and rescued us from the little Japan to show us the real Guam. It all started with a barbecue at their friend's house, and here we met the Guam University Marine laboratory clan, as also, it came back to me the spirit of our academic years back in Algarve...that felt good!

Next was a deeper swim into Pacific Ocean with a scuba dive. this was my first dive after the course 3 years ago, and I thought it wasn't for real....it's so good down there...I always have the feeling that i will not want to come back...Once again Alyssa and Sparky were amazing and organized everything!

Guam's diversity is great. In that same morning we tried to see Manta Ray that lately have been searching for food at Gun Beach, included in nature reserve, still resisting to hotels...we hope it stays like this...

Alyssa took us to a car tour the same day. it seems that if we want to see the real life of the local people, the Chamorro, we have to get out of the main touristic areas like Tumon beach, and the island "capital" Agana.

Each sightspot gave us the chance to take pictures and each one was different than the before one. Guam has everything! It has beautiful beaches with coral reefs, touristic villages full of fantsy and luxory shops, local quiet villages where stress as no entrance, the influences of spanish colonization that can be seen on some arquitecture, the american and japanese ocupations represented by the many peace memorials, as also the mountains and valleys that tells us that there is a land to respect there....
Comemos e bebemos neste lugar plantado à beira mar.
During our journey, we found what they call the "Fiesta". At Merizo area, it was time to welcome the summer arrival. As so, in that weekend each family prepared a party, where food, deserts, drinks, a lot of music and a smile couldn't be missing. While passing the respective parties, we were often invited to stop the car and join them! Another characteristic of Chamorro people that amazed us and make us smile...Through Alyssa's friend we end up on her family fiesta as if we were part of the family and again we were invited to join. We ate great food, we drunk and we smile again in a place near the shore.

In the last day we only had time for a final jump in the beach...but it felt so good...

So, our mini holidays were over, but they felt so good that we recharged the batteries to go back to the Big City Life!
Again we want to thank Alyssa and Sparky! You guys were simply the best!MUITO OBRIGADO!
